Hazard Detection and Avoidance for Lunar Landing Missions (NEXTMOON)

This activity was part of an ambitious ESA mission study project (NEXT-LL) to develop a spacecraft capable of landing on the vicinity of the Lunar South Pole and delivering a small rover to explore the region. Spin.Works’ contribution consisted on the selection of imaging sensors, image processing algorithms and 3D reconstruction techniques, as well as the application and optimization of the algorithms, for the purposes of obtaining risk maps from the lunar surface during the spacecraft’s descent, detecting hazardous sites for the spacecraft, and selecting the most suitable landing locations.

The project comprised the following tasks:

  • – Review, trade-off and selection of promising image processing algorithms for hazard detection
  • – Review, trade-off and selection of appropriate hazard detection sensors
  • – Contribution to descent strategy definition (visibility requirements, hazard detection altitude thresholds, descent sequence timing, etc)
